Eric Alspaugh

FOUNDER

Eric's Bio

Growing up in San Diego, he always had a love for science.  Eric started his career as a bench scientist after graduating from the UCSD with a degree in Biology.  While working at Immusol (now ItherX) in San Diego, Eric had an opportunity to be involved in research for HIV, functional genomics, a class of catalytic RNAs called ribozymes for therapeutic treatment of cardiovascular, ophthalmic and dermal indications.  He was involved in the development of pre-clinical pharmaceuticals and obtained regulatory clearances.  During that time, he was also focused on research, development, and pre-clinical studies on three separate INDs.

In 2004, he graduated from law school at the University of San Diego, and was admitted to practice with the USPTO, and the California Bar.  After law school, Eric joined Haight Brown & Bonesteel where he focused on intellectual property, environmental law, and business transactions.  He was recruited to serve as patent counsel for Biosensors International, a global medical device firm.  Eric helped Biosensors International valuation increase from $700MM to over $4B while listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange. Additionally, Eric managed Biosensors International’s international patent litigation at the Hague successfully with the Court finding non-infringement of the asserted patent.

Eric left Biosensors International to co-found Advanced Bifurcations Systems and Sterling Vascular. Advanced Bifurcation Systems continues to develop its patented drug eluting stent and novel catheter platform in joint venture with Cedars Sinai and a publicly traded US medical device manufacturer. Eric served as counsel for several international based technology companies and an Orange County technology incubator. He has been fortunate to participate in numerous mergers and acquisitions with his companies and now participates selectively with investment banks, private equity, and a couple of family offices performing IP portfolio valuation, due diligence, and corporate compliance functions.

Eric was a founding member and serves as Counsel for DeviceAlliance.  He spent time as an instructor at UCI Extension teaching various regulatory coursework and designed and taught his own course, Biomedical Business and Legal Management Essentials.  He serves as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) Officer in the California State Guard Legal Support Command.  He has been a guest speaker at Blackstone UCI Launchpad, and lectured at numerous Orange County incubators, and the Hong Kong Business Association.

As a licensed California real estate broker for over 15 years, Eric has a diverse background in advising clients on complex business transactions involving commercial real estate, lease backs, 1031 exchanges, and commercial development. The interplay between tax, real estate, and intellectual property transactions is complex and Eric enjoys advising clients proactively so that the client can truly make informed business decisions.

Eric has volunteered thousands of hours for numerous non-profits advocating for community organizations, animal rights, and underserved communities. Eric previously volunteered at the Orange County Bar Association as a Mandatory Fee Arbitrator.  He is currently providing pro bono services to service members through his JAG command.

Eric and his wife, Virginia reside in Dana Point, CA.  In his free time, he enjoys cooking, woodworking, biking and watching his four children’s baseball games and dance recitals.
